Elsecar Cricket Club is proud to announce that it was awarded funding from Sport England, thanks to investment from The National Lottery, to support a major tree management and environmental improvement project at its community facilities in Elsecar.
The funding has enabled essential work to be carried out on long-established trees across the site, many of which had become overgrown, unmanaged, or posed safety concerns. Working closely with local authorities and neighbouring residents, the project focuses on improving safety, sustainability, and the overall environment for the many children, families and community members who use the space.
Over recent years, several trees had grown significantly and, without proper maintenance, began to present risks including falling branches. The new project ensures that all trees are professionally assessed and managed, with necessary removals carried out sensitively and responsibly.
Importantly, trees that have been lost due to age, disease or overgrowth will be replaced, helping to create a greener, safer and more sustainable environment for the future. As part of the replanting plans, apple trees will be introduced, offering a unique community feature and a nod to the area’s heritage, recalling Elsecar’s historic “crabapple fields”.
Jason Meadows - Elsecar Cricket Club Representative, said:
“This funding allows us to protect the safety of our young people while also investing in the long-term future of our community space. Thanks to Sport England and The National Lottery, we can create an environment that looks better, feels safer, and reflects Elsecar’s history.”
The project reinforces the site’s role as a central community asset, ensuring it remains welcoming, sustainable and enjoyable for generations to come.
This project is made possible by Sport England investment, funded by The National Lottery.
